Schall und Stille: Malers Hüs – Hedehusum

Welcome to the eighth and final post in a series of blog posts about the album „Malers Hüs“ by Schall & Stille (Stephan). The seventh one can be found here (and includes a link to the previous one).

Hedehusum“ is the last track on the album, an instrumental that takes you to a small dwelling on the island of Föhr in the North Sea or to any other happy or dreamy place you can imagine.

A slow and quiet piece of music, and special in a way – three musicians contributed to it. Stephan laid the foundation, MyLoFy and his guitar(s) nestle up and I had the great pleasure to play Stephan’s old alto recorder and blend in as well.

A wonderful way to end the album, and I really hope you enjoyed listening (and reading my short posts).

Make sure to get the album directly on Stephan’s website or download it from Bandcamp, and look forward to whatever Schall & Stille will be up to in future.

  1. All songs on this album are close to my heart, but „Hedehusum“ in a very special way.

When the album was released in December last year, very few people noticed – it was only after I wrote an open letter to Mikey Shulman of Suno, prominently mentioning „Malers Hüs“, that people started to take notice, proving once again that music doesn’t matter as much as marketing tricks and manipulating people (although my open letter was never intended that way)… which is sadly also true on the fediverse.

But at first there was nothing, which is generally not so easy to handle for me.

Then my mother in-law died… and suddenly my mind was off „Malers Hüs“ and there was an overwhelming sense of sadness and grief… and, eventually, the funeral.

When the family gathered to prepare for the funeral, my wife’s relatives suggested that „Hedehusum“ be played. I thought about it, and eventually agreed – it felt right. I had loved my mother-in-law dearly, and I know in my heart she would have cherished it.

During the service, the music carried a quiet, tender weight. Afterward, several people, among them complete strangers, came up to me and told me how deeply moved they were by the piece. I remember feeling something warm lift inside me in that moment, a small light within the grief. And I realized: that’s enough. It doesn’t matter so much if the fediverse notices, or if BBC6 plays it. This – touching lives, honoring someone loved, sharing love and grief, being able to express what words cannot say – is much more important.
